Governor’s Budget Proposal Includes Cuts to Library Funding
Recently, Governor Andrew Cuomo released his FY2019-20 Executive Budget proposal, which signals the start of budget negotiations. The proposal included a $4 million cut in State Library Aid and a $20 million cut in State Library Construction Aid. The Geneva Public Library has turned to Construction Aid to fund vital building projects, such as the elevator improvements, in four of the past five years and relies on the Library Aid every year for funding to support the Library’s broadband Internet, OWWL2Go digital content, staff support services, and much more.
Several Library staff will be attending Library Advocacy Day in Albany on February 27 to share their stories about how the Library plays a crucial role in the Geneva community. We encourage our patrons to share their thoughts on the proposed budget with their elected officials. Those wishing to do so can visit www.nyla.org and click on the Advocacy link to learn how they can help support libraries and to send an email to their legislators. For more information on how the proposed budget affects Geneva and libraries throughout the Pioneer Library System, contact Library Director Chris Finger at 315-789-5303, ext.106.
